“Silent Wood, Speaking Soul” Exhibition by Toshiya Kimura, Chizuru Ikeda, Kun-Cheng Huang, and Yun-Chen Yang
A Taiwan-Japan Joint Exhibition of Wood Sculpture & Ceramics
Whispers of Nature, Echoes of Life
In a world where perfection is often revered, this exhibition chooses otherwise—it embraces the imperfect. Cracks, knots, and scars in wood are not flaws to be hidden but truths to be honored. Silent Wood, Speaking Soul is a collaborative exhibition between Taiwanese and Japanese artists, expressing reverence for nature, life, and the unseen stories carried within animals and the land they inhabit.
At the heart of this exhibition is a Japanese wood sculptor deeply involved in animal protection. His works speak of compassion and protest—protest against violence, abandonment, and neglect; compassion for the voiceless. Rather than carving away the wood’s natural blemishes, he works with them, letting each irregularity symbolize the pain and endurance of wildlife caught in human conflict. His sculptures are not mere representations, but quiet roars—an artistic outcry for empathy, justice, and healing.
Alongside him are Taiwanese artists who also explore themes of nature and life, working through ceramics and mixed media. The warmth of clay and the raw honesty of wood come together in a multi-sensory space, evoking the stillness of a forest and the breath of wild creatures. Echoing the ancient Taoist text Zhuangzi, which says, "Heaven and Earth were born with me; all things are one with me," this exhibition reminds us of our deep entanglement with all living beings.
In Silent Wood, Speaking Soul, you will not only see the art—you will hear nature’s whisper and feel the lingering souls of animals who once ran free. Each carved line is an act of listening; each fracture, a gesture of remembrance. This exhibition is a quiet but urgent invitation to reflect: In a world of silence, how do we use our hands and hearts to honor every fragile, irreplaceable life?
