“Beneath the Surface” — A Solo Exhibition by Turkish Artist Rukiye Garip

Mrs. Rukiye is an artist of profound depth—reserved and understated, yet intellectually rich. Her artistic vision has long transcended secular traditionalism; it is her capacity for "stillness" that allows her world to expand far beyond the reach of the average observer. While many of us perceive in a "single dimension," Rukiye invites us into a multidimensional realm. As the saying goes: only by quieting the mind do we discover that a blade of grass is a forest to an ant, or that the chirping of insects is a symphony for the flowers. Only in stillness can we enjoy the caress of the wind and yearn for the gentle beauty of the clouds. If "emotion" and "sensitivity" are sisters, most of us are merely aware of their existence, but Rukiye has long been their intimate confidante.

Consequently, her art does not begin with a quest for flamboyant form, but originates from a meticulous observation and profound realization of the natural world. In her compositions, water is not merely a medium; it is an interface—a complex field that simultaneously carries light, reflection, texture, and time. Beneath the water's surface, every detail of pebbles, fallen leaves, reflections, and shimmering light creates a deep visual tension through the play of transparent layers. This tension is not delivered through dramatic narrative, but through the accumulation of detail and the resonance between materials, leading the viewer to understand through contemplation that "power lies beneath the surface."

To Rukiye, certain subjects are "busy" with life. The world of water and what lies beneath is more than just scenery; it symbolizes the orderly cycle of natural phenomena and the continuity of life's essence, offering the artist infinite surprises. She once noted that when depicting water, "the greatest challenge is not imitation, but understanding its transparency, reflection, and depth; only then can the inner vitality of water be expressed." Under this creative philosophy, water exists as both a phenomenon and a metaphor. The stones, reflections, and fallen leaves beneath the surface are no longer mere visual materials, but symbols of time, memory, and perception.

Rukiye’s work has garnered international attention precisely because of her masterful balance between realistic technique and emotional depth. Every brushstroke reveals precise control over light, color, and materiality, while the overall composition demonstrates a keen understanding of natural order and visual rhythm. Whether it is the reflection in still water, a drifting leaf, or a stone resting in the flow, the viewer is drawn into a state of "slow looking"—returning to the act of seeing itself and the relationship between the observer and the observed.

"Beneath the Surface" aims to open a field of vision where the audience sees more than a representation of nature. Through the transparency and visual depth of water, one experiences "existence beneath the plane"—an aesthetic experience that is non-linear and far from fleeting. Rukiye’s paintings remind us that the smallest details of daily life often possess the greatest power, and that the "surface" is the most direct and profound interface connecting perception and emotion. Truly breathtaking artists are rare. I have always explored those who dream of the future or the unknown—those who are not only dedicated to the memory and meaning of painting but are also committed to discovering a world of wonder.
