TAIWANscape: Inside-Out of Taiwan’s Cultural Landscape

TAIWANscape: Inside-Out of Taiwan’s Cultural Landscape

TAIWANscape: Inside-Out of Taiwan's Cultural Landscape brings together perspectives from individuals with Taiwanese roots and Hongkongers—voices from beyond Taiwan's shores—to explore the concept of "Taiwanscape." This exhibition moves beyond the conventional focus on natural landscapes to offer a more comprehensive interpretation: "scape" as a sophisticated interplay of historical narratives, cultural traditions, and contemporary social dynamics.

Taiwanese artists contribute refined narratives shaped by their firsthand experiences, cultural heritage, and the nuances of daily life. Meanwhile, Hong Kong artists provide a complementary insular perspective, informed by histories of cultural synthesis, offering a distinctive interpretation of Taiwan. These combined viewpoints create a productive dialogue that avoids both idealization and oversimplification, instead highlighting the multifaceted nature of Taiwan's cultural identity. In this context, "landscape" transcends its visual dimension to represent a cultural terrain—a repository of diverse influences and evolving identities. Through Chinese art—including ink art, jiaocai (膠彩, the animal-glue-bound mineral pigment associated with nihonga-style painting), and 3-D works—the participating artists guide viewers through this conceptual space, presenting

Taiwan not as a static entity but as a dynamic environment where memory converges with contemporary elements, local traditions with global influences, and tangible aspects with emotional resonance.

This exhibition has been made possible through the generous support of the Department of Fine Arts, National Taiwan Normal University and KAI'S Gallery. We express our sincere appreciation to both institutions for their contributions. The exhibition portrays "Taiwanscape" as both a geographical location and a conceptual framework—one that emerges from the intersection of internal and external perspectives, revealing the depth, complexity, and adaptability of Taiwan's cultural landscape.
